DEMETRA is the innovative project for the protection of food safety. The results of the DEMETRA project will be presented on December 14th

The results of the DEMETRA project will be presented on December 14th, in the green room of Lamezia Europa, in the city of Lamezia Terme.
DEMETRA is the innovative project for the protection of food safety, led by Rina Consulting – Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A. and participated by Ecor International, Net Service, University of Calabria and Poste Italiane.

The project partners have been working together for several years in the region of Calabria within the Technological District MATELIOS, developing skills and scientific infrastructure of excellence in the Calabrian territory, in particular in the field of advanced materials and production technologies.
In the region of Calabria the agri-food sector is the most important economic sector and the distinctive element of regional production. The marketplace, that will be one of the results of the project, will have important implications in collateral fields, such as the promotion of the tourism, guaranteeing a greater protection in reference to the purchases and the sales of the products.

The project is funded by the The Ministry of Education, University and Research with funds PON “Research and Innovation” 2014-2020 and FSC. The project goal is linking three macro lines with high technological and innovative impact: use of nickel-free steels and textured laser treatments, computer systems based on blockchain architecture and advanced cryptographic solutions.
DEMETRA has the goal of establishing a marking system that could distinguish the product and its supply chain, ensuring traceability and limiting the risk of counterfeiting.

The results obtained by the activities of Ecor International are interesting for the food packaging sector because they will allow:

  • the removal of the release of potentially harmful substances such as nickel;
  • the improvement of the cleanability of the surfaces in contact with food, with consequent reduction of the maintenance times necessary for the total removal of the contaminants, as required by the stringent regulations on the safety of the plants;
  • the reduction of the impact of production cycles on the ecosystem, by reducing the amount of water needed for cleaning operations. This is a serious problem for the industry, especially if it is located in areas where there is a shortage of water;

At the presentation of the results of the DEMETRA project, there will be two significant moments:
In the first part there will be the exposure of the results of the project, by Riccardo Barberi, Calabria University, by Ivan Moretti, Ecor International S.p.A.; by Mario Tului, Rina Consulting – Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A., by Marco Di Francesco, Net Service S.p.A., and by Massimiliano Aschi, Poste Italiane S.p.A..
In the second part there will be the round table that will focus on: development perspectives and strategies. For this second session, moderated by Ermelando Tolino of Ecor International S.p.A., the speakers will be: Rocco Mammoliti of Poste Italiane S.p.A., Domenico Stocchi of Ecor International S.p.A., Pietro Gimondo of Rina Consulting – Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A., Gianluca Ortolani of Net Service S.p.A., Maria Carmela Passarelli and Stefano Curcio, both from the Calabria University .

DEMETRA may serve as a basis for the establishment of a nickel-free food quality label“- explains Ermelando Tolino, Head of Institutional Affairs at Ecor International s.p.A –Moreover the developed methodologies can be used in many situations, as a powerful development tool for the national agricultural and food field“.
