When potable water makes its first appearance

Ecor Research and its partner Aerosekur presented to the Italian Army Corps of Engineers a project of the mobile water treatment unit, during the “Smart Sapper 2015”.

Ecor Research attended the event “Smart Sapper 2015” organized in Rome from the Italian Army Corps of Engineers. Prominent authorities of the State took part to the event, such as the Undersecretary of State for Defence, Mr Domenico Rossi, and the Chief of Staff of the Italian army, General Danilo Errico.

In the first part of the day, exercises of the different departments of the Army took place, using dozens of specialist tools, procedures and operational capabilities for the use both in national territory and international missions have been put to the test. In a second step, suppliers presented to the army officers the latest news.

Among the exhibitors, there were also Ecor Research and Aerosekur, a manufacturer of advanced equipment and survival systems for critical missions within the Aerospace and Defense field.
Ecor Research and Aerosekur have presented a project in partnership. The program concerns the construction of a mobile water purification unit, a plant intended for the treatment of water, including its purification, in the context of interventions in support of the population affected by natural disasters, to which frequently the Corps of Engineers takes part, and military interventions.

The objective of Ecor Research and Aerosekur is to facilitate the transportation of the equipment and make it parachutable, in order to facilitate their use in hostile territories and with different environmental characteristics.

To meet these requirements, the design team has conceived several water treatment modules with specific functions. Each of these blocks is autonomous and can, thus, be easily transported by decreasing the maintenance costs of the mobile unit and simplifying its use, since it is not required authorized personnel. The plant can produce 1,000 gallons per day of drinking water from a natural source such as a river, a lake, a sea, a well, satisfying the need for feeding and personal hygiene of about 20-30 people. Another new feature of the project is the new-patented technology for water treatment using the process of photo-ozonolysis, ensuring greater water purity.

The design phase lasted about one year and a half and in the coming months the prototype plant will be presented to the corps of Engineers. In particular, Ecor Research has been involved in the project for the industrialization of the system and the definition of complex processes.

TO KNOW

█  The mobile water purification unit is a water treatment plant for the water used in interventions to support people affected by natural disasters, to which the Italian Army Corps of Engineers frequently takes part and military interventions. The equipment consists of: a power module intended to draw water; the desalination module which removes salts from brackish water; the form of condensation which turns into water the moisture in the air; the module for purifying water and make it drinkable; the auxiliary module in which are present the utilities (power unit, compressor and control panel).

█  The photo-ozonolysis is an advanced oxidation process based on the combined action of a powerful oxidant, ozone, and ultraviolet light. Unlike a simple ozonation or a classic UV irradiation, sterilization of the water is faster, more complete and effective towards all the pathogenic and non-pathogenic micro-organisms, and it is more safe from the purity point of view.
